Nick WhartonThe Champions, an affiliate of WIE, strive for deeper, more trusting relationships across race, culture, and gender among men through critical conversations and community engagement as a social capital imperative. Persistent economic uncertainty, coupled with real personal insecurity has given rise to familiar primal fears of race and class and the tendency to turn on one another rather than to one another with strategic solutions to shared challenges.

The absence of civility in our public discourse on grave matters of social and economic mutual self- interest is evidence of the urgency to create transformative conversations across difference if Charlotte’s sustainability as a 21st century, world class city is to be realized. Equally compelling is the fading quality of life chances for boys and young men across all racial groups in which clear solutions is mired in flawed assumptions and caricatures of individual worth and indifference that un-inspires possibilities of thoughtful public policy and community engagement. Charlotte is widely considered to be on the precipice of great purpose but the need for authentic dialogue across difference among men in leadership has never been more pressing or more difficult to achieve. Our task, as Champions, a name wishfully bestowed, is to support the WIE mission and become members, but more importantly it is to ignite the drivers of change that empower trusting relationships across difference among men.
